John Jacob Astor, American businessman, first built his wealth in fur trading in the 18th century. His operation span both coasts of the United States, Asia, and Europe. The business functioned whereby furs shipped from the US would be traded and exchanged on different continents for other goods. His was a true global enterprise. When the fur trading business was destroyed, Astor adapted and transformed into a real estate creating the infamous Walldorf Astoria hotel. The majority did not have the resources adapt.
